The infinite number of fools behind the anti-palm oil campaigns
Article by Palm Oil Truth Foundation
There is a famous Latin maxim "Infinitus est numerus stultorum" which can be loosely translated as "Infinite is the number of fools". This maxim is remarkably apt when applied to the current anti-palm oil hysteria propagated by the likes of Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth (FOE), Rainforest Action Network (RAN) and the Palm Oil Action Group (POA) and blindly lapped up by the mainstream media.
What is clearly a well funded and meticulously planned and executed proxy trade war is cleverly disguised as genuine concern for environmental conservation.
The red flag for the mainstream media should have been the now discredited anti-palm oil campaign mounted by the curiously named Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) in the mid eighties alleging falsely that palm oil is bad for the heart.
The campaign was quickly buried under a deluge of scientific studies that showed that palm oil was, in fact, heart friendly given that it was the only edible oil packed with anti-oxidants such as Co Enzyme Q10, beta carotenes, tocotrienols and a whole host of micro-nutrients that have been shown in peer reviewed scientific studies to lower cholesterol and help boost HDL cholesterol.
Discredited and dispirited, CSPI retreated to their lair in Washington to plan another assault on palm oil. Yet, when CSPI launched another campaign in 2005 alleging that palm oil was causing massive deforestation which is threatening the very existence of the orang utan, the main stream media should have treated the story with some caution. However, to the eternal shame of the media, this story gained traction and the mainstream media together with "environmental organizations" like Greenpeace, FOE, RAN and now POA quickly ran with the story without checking their facts. Infinitus est numerus stultorum!
For one, in vehemently blaming developing countries for deforestation, these "environmental organizations" have remained strangely muted on the forest fires and rampant pollution in the developed countries.
For another, it is well established that Malaysia is a small country with a land mass roughly that of the state of New Mexico which should tell us something - palm oil does not require quite as much land as the agitators are trying to make it out to be.
Since palm oil is the most productive of all oilseed crops with a yield of 4-5 metric tons per hectare which is close to 10 times that of its competitors such as soy, rapeseed and sunflower, how can there be any truth to the deforestation allegations when Malaysia, with its insignificant land mass, have been the world's largest cultivator of palm oil for more than a century.
Yet the country still retains more than 55% forest cover, which is certainly much higher than the prevailing 20 odd per cent found in the countries of the industrialized west, from which these environmental agitators hail!
Why, total world acreage planted with palm oil is less than 1% of the world agricultural area. In the circumstances, it is certainly a stretch for the agitators to allege that palm oil is responsible for "massive deforestation" that is contributing 20% of global carbon emission and causing global warming!
In the view of the Palm Oil Truth Foundation it is more likely the fact that palm oil is fast becoming the most popular edible oil in the world which could be the real reason behind the discomfiture of its competitors with palm oil's growth that triggered this agitation in the first place.
The Palm Oil Truth Foundation is compelled to ask whether the real motives behind the anti-palm oil movement could be motivated by the fact that palm oil is:
1. the most productive of all edible oils 2. inherently healthful as it is naturally rich in anti-oxidants like tocotrienols, Co Q10 and beta-carotenes (which is why the oil is naturally red in colour)3. the cheapest cooking oil in the world due to its incredible yield and because of its price advantage is now increasingly popular as a feedstock for biodiesel.
It is time that the main stream media wake up to the fact that these anti-palm oil campaigns are really cleverly disguised proxy trade wars.
