Is it ok to dry fire a rifle with a spent case?
Best answer:
It is NOT recommended for most firearms. Look for "Snap Cap" or other training cartridges that have a hard rubber insert that simulates a primer in order to prevent damage to your firing pin.It is better than dry firing without anything. There are caliber specific snap caps made just for that purpose. The occasional dry fire shouldn't damage a firearm's firing pin, but there are some that it is just not recommended to dry fire. The firing pins are brittle and could possibly break (usually on older firearms, military issue) or can be damaged (like in a 22 rim fire especially).A spent case already has had the primer pinned. There is virtually no difference now between having a spent case and nothing at all. Most newer rifles are ok to dryfire now anyway. If yours specifically has instructions not to,as said before, snap caps are in order.
