How can I prevent my acer laptop form overheating and shutting down ?
Best answer:
open up the back of your computer

check to see if the fan is fine inside

if not, blow on it, clean it and clear all the dust (2 year it collects quite a bit)

If you dont have a cooling fan that you buy for about 30 bucks, locate the parts on the bottom of your computer where the hot air comes out and try to keep those open. Instead of leaving it flat on your desk, support some parts with books, other things, to keep the air opening wide and clearly open.la notebook cooling pad might help.

I recommend getting it serviced though. The laptop may one day cut off and die.Well, you can do a few things. The most important would be to clean it out. Over time dust, hair, and other evil insulators can build up in your computer and eventually cause a meltdown. I recommend buying a can of air and using a screwdriver that is not magnetized to open the case and go ahead and clean it out. While your at it take a moment to make sure that there is not buildup around your fan (i.e. hair wrapped around it).

The next best thing I could recommend and that is nearly as important as the first- buy/make a cooling pad. At a time, I was very short on cash and ended up just setting my laptop on two ice packs. (Not the squishy bags - the small bricks). Your best bet is to go out and buy one. the fan(s) on the pad do not have to line up with the fan on your laptop necessarily.

Also, be sure to give your computer a rest from time to time, if you have another computer then split the usage time up between them.

Finally, if your computer is overheating whilst running graphics heavy applications such as video games... stop playing them. This is an early sign of an impending doom. Stop playing them and keep your system cool, it will keep your laptop alive that much longer.
