Can a WiMAX802.16e USB Adapter also connect to the normal a, b & g wireless technologies?
Best answer:
No, 802.16e is a different technology than 802.11a/b/g/n. Although related to wireless connectivity and Internet access, the two standards are aimed at different applications.

- WiMAX is a long-range system, covering many miles/kilometers that typically uses licensed spectrum.
- Wi-Fi is a shorter range system, typically tens of yards/meters, that uses unlicensed spectrum.
- WiMAX and Wi-Fi have quite different Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms.

Its similar to the way your mobile phone works, that uses wireless technology, but its very different to WiFi or WiMAX and couldn't connect to a WiFi/WiMAX network. In fact GSM is at the other end of the scale/spectrum to WiFi. Think of a curved graph, with speed on one axis, and range/distance on the other, the speed decreases as the range increases: GSM is very long range, but slow (40 - 60Kbit/s), then you have UMTS & HSPA, slightly shorter range, but faster, followed by WiMAX - a shorter range still, but much faster (2 - 12Mbit/s), then WiFi, a very short range, but very fast (802.11g - 54Mbit/s & 802.11n - 248Mbit/s).

It maybe that manufactures will combine WiFi & WiMAX technology in the same USB dongle (adaptor) to allow people to switch between WiFi & WiMAX networks depending on what service is in range. But they will still be using the 2 different standards (802.16 & 802.11).

Hope this helps
